FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                         Wednesday, March 07, 2012

The State Senate acknowledged the iron mining bill is simply not ready for passage.  Unanimously, my colleagues and I referred the iron mining bill back to committee.  This action allows us to continue find agreement on responsible mining legislation.

Job creation is a priority but it should not come at the expense of our environmental protections.   I co-sponsored the bi-partisan efforts crafted by Senators Dale Schultz and Bob Jauch.  This bill is a responsible mining legislation that balances the creation of jobs with protection of our state’s natural resources.

The bill establishes a clear timeline for mining companies to seek necessary permits; keeps in place critical environmental protections; supports local communities and ensures public participation in the process.

I look forward to continued efforts to modernize Wisconsin mining laws.  I call on my colleagues to reach agreement on mining laws in an open and transparent process. We can create a law that brings jobs to our state while protecting our lakes and streams, providing communities with resources to restore infrastructure like roads and safeguarding public health.
