National Guard members who missed shooting their buck while serving their country will have an opportunity to hunt in a special arrangement negotiated by Senator Kathleen Vinehout (D-Alma) and Representative Chris Danou (D-Trempealeau).

“Last February, more than 3,200 soldiers of the Red Arrow Brigade Combat Team were mobilized in the largest operational deployment of Wisconsin Guard troops since World War II,” explained Rep. Danou. “Because of their service to our country, these soldiers missed things we take for granted, including the traditional gun deer hunt.  Sen. Vinehout and I were contacted by several returning soldiers who asked for our help.”

Sen. Vinehout and Rep. Danou introduced legislation establishing a one time weekend deer hunt for returning troops.  Following introduction of the proposals, officials at the Department of Natural Resources worked with the lawmakers to find a way to allow returning troops to hunt without passing a law.

The department will work to link landowners, who have crop damage caused by nuisance deer, with returning soldiers interested in hunting.

“We have reached a win – win agreement,” said Senator Vinehout.  “Returning troops will have the opportunity to hunt high deer population areas. Farmers who have had crop damage have someone to harvest nuisance deer.”

“This gives soldiers flexibility,” said Rep. Danou. “They can go out any day between now and September convenient for the veteran and the farmer.”

According to Matt Frank, Secretary of the WI Department of Natural Resources, “We are happy to work with landowners experiencing deer damage and with Senator Vinehout and Representative Danou to give our vets a chance to catch up on the deer hunting they missed while they were serving our country overseas.”

Veterans interested in participating in the crop damage deer hunt should contact Representative Danou at 888-534-0091 or Senator Vinehout at 877-763-6636.
