Audit Committee Co-Chair Vinehout Calls for Legislative Solution to WEDC Oversight Problems

We need to know who’s received what money and what they are doing with the money,” Senator Kathleen Vinehout told members of the Joint Committee on Audit.
“State law is very clear,” Vinehout said. “WEDC must collect information on the results of job creation programs. Lawmakers must be able to evaluate the return on the investment of taxpayers’ dollars in job creation programs.”
Vinehout told committee members, “This is a politically sensitive topic – the creation of jobs or the lack thereof. But I ask my colleagues to put aside their political aspirations and work with me to identify ways to improve the structure we have to support job creators. Help me solve the problems identified in the audit.”
Vinehout announced to the committee she would use the hearing to collect information on needed legislative changes and would instruct Legislative Council attorneys to begin the drafting process to create legislation to improve oversight.
The nonpartisan Legislative Audit Bureau found some agencies failed to comply with a law requiring they report on actual jobs created – or other program outcomes. Of files sampled, auditors found only half of those businesses reporting achieved promised results.
