Madison- State Senator Kathleen Vinehout (D-Alma) issued the following statement on the mining bill:

“If we, as a state, are going to have responsible mining, we need a responsible mining law. Fast-tracking a proposal with more than 100 pages of changes to environmental protections through the Legislature’s budget writing committee is not responsible.

Presumptive approvals and removing citizens’ means to protect their property is not how we do things in Wisconsin. If a large, multi-national mining corporation wants to do business in Wisconsin, we welcome the additional jobs. But we also expect them to respect their neighbors, play by the rules that protect the environment and pay their fair share to offset the damage they cause. Unfortunately this mining bill lets the company dodge their responsibilities.”
